It’s summer and we can’t wait to catch up on some reading. We decided that it would be fun to put out a little summer reading challenge.
This is a no guilt, no stress challenge. Participate as much or as little as you like. Read one book or thirty.
We’ll add posts on our Thriving Young Teachers Facebook page throughout the summer so you can share what you’ve been reading. We love a good book suggestion!
Here is our teachers’ summer reading challenge:
Read a book for fun.
Read whatever you love. A thriller, a mystery, a romance, your favorite beachy book. Reread a favorite book. No judgement here- the heart loves what it loves! You deserve to spend time reading something that you will enjoy.
Read a new children’s or YA book.
Read something your students might like. Have you checked out the new Caldecott or Newbery Award books? Or try the Michael Prince Award winners for young adult books. You can find more award winning books at the American Library Association page here.
Read a book in a series.
We know that getting students to read books in a series is a great way to keep them reading. It works for adults, too. Haven’t read a series since Hunger Games or Divergent? Maybe this is your time!
Read a book to make you a better teacher.
After the spring we just experienced, we’re guessing that learning more about online teaching will be a hot trend. Has your district adopted a new curriculum? Are there new teaching strategies you would like to try?
Read a book to gain new perspective.
Many book lists are circulating connecting to the Black Lives Matter movement and understanding diversity. Is there an issue you don’t really understand and you’d like to get some insight? Reading is a great way to understand different perspectives.
Read a book to help you learn a new skill.
Have you been wanting to up your cooking skill since the pandemic? Maybe photography is more your thing. Learn new mindfulness techniques or let Marie Kondo help you banish clutter. There is an informational book about almost everything, let your interest guide your exploration.
That’s it! We think this summer reading challenge is a doable challenge.
To sweeten the deal, if you read a book from each of the categories, let us know and we will email you a certificate. You can hang it on your file cabinet and impress your students. Or hang it on your fridge and be a role model for your kids. Or just bask in the warmth of the sun and your new knowledge.
Why not jump in and join our teachers’ summer reading challenge? We look forward to talking about books this summer.
Our Best,
